Day 3, July 17th, 2009: A huge Surprise by SMS!

by Jeremiah Kiponda Kambi, CEO Aiducation International Kenya

We left for Mombasa early in the morning and had some breakfast in Motown. At our first high school „Agha Khan high School“ the students were busy doing their exams. We therefore decided to head to three other high schools „Ribe Boys“, „Ribe Girls“ and „St. Johns High School“.

We arrived at St. Johns at lunch time, were received by the deputy and handed over to the teacher in charge of bursaries. Its was also exam time, and the girls walking with plates for lunch serving.

We met some of our scholars, Phvalle, Getrude and Sawa Ibrahim. Sawa Ibrahim is in her last high school year. She had dropped out last year for she could not pay the school fees. Because she is extraordinary bright, the school called her back, hoping to get an AiduMaker for her. She is now really relying on us.

A similar story is that of Piri. I have both their applications here and will transfer them to Switzerland as soon as possible.

We interviewed two other students before we left for Ribe Girls High School.

At Ribe, the reception was so warm, and again, the students were sitting their exams. We signed the visitors book.
The needy girls were called, we meet Munira – one of our applicants, as well as our scholars Mercy Dama, Kadzo Mwambegu and Penina Mali plus three other girls. All were interviewed with the film team - a really exciting moment for all of us!

Since it was becoming very late, we had to go hurry to Ribe Boys High School.

THEN SUDDENLY, WE RECEIVED AN SMS FROM FLORIAN, FROM OUR SWISS CHAPTER: 7 GIRLS HAVE BEEN AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS - I go gaga, this is the highest number of scholarships ever donated by a single person!!! We had had just met some of those girls who were still applicants a few minutes ago and had  become scholars now! I announced the good news to the team, but it was unfortunately too late to return!

Mr. Thoya, from Ribe Boys High School had waited for us for the whole day!! Suddenly, it started to rain, the crew was not sure if we can shoot and I strongly encouraged them.

At Ribe Boys High School, the boys had also been waiting for us for a long time. It was dinner time, many students had plates in their hands, others were still playing, the sun was going down.

After the second interview, it began to shower again, Coke was served, and the Driver Alex suddently signaled us that it’s time to leave, since we are already very late. At nine o’clock pm, we were still on our way home and Enrico suddenly asked „What are we doing in the middle of the road at 9pm - this was to be a 3 hour drive! Do not f... with my time!“. The yelling continued for a moment - Enrico and I started arguing a little with each other while Lisi, the other member of the film crew stayed very cool and relaxed! Finally we arrived at home in the middle of the night. Very tired but happy at the same time: we had had a very successful day and were happy to be at home again!
